Plot summary
With the Blitz under way, the British government works to keep up public morale and to draw the United States into the war, and the Ministry of Information keeps a team writing propaganda films. Catrin Cole joins that team, valued by her male colleagues only for female dialogue, paid less than a man and left uncredited. Her husband, the war artist and air raid warden Ellis Cole, takes little interest in the job. Sent to interview Lily and Rose Starling, sisters reported to have taken part in the Dunkirk evacuation, she is seconded to the production company as the script takes shape amid quarrels among the writers over accuracy and propaganda. Tom Buckley belittles her contributions and argues for male heroes, while Phyl Moore, another of the women working on the production, offers reassurance.
