Plot summary
Florence Green is a war widow who has lived for years in Hardborough, a small town on the Suffolk coast. She decides to open a bookshop in the Old House, a damp building that has stood empty a long while. At the bank, Mr. Keble warns her that other people may have different plans for the space. She finds that hard to believe, since the property has been neglected so long. Word of her plan spreads quickly, and residents point out the difficulties she may meet. Violet Gamart, an influential local woman, had wanted the Old House for an arts center of her own. She makes clear she has not dropped the idea, even though the building is no longer empty. She and others set out to have Florence evicted and the shop shut.
