Plot summary
In 1968, Jean Purdy takes a lab manager post at the University of Cambridge, hired by the scientist Robert Edwards. Together they bring in Patrick Steptoe, an obstetrician and surgeon, and the three set out to fight infertility in women by fertilizing an egg outside the body. Robert calls the procedure in vitro fertilization; Patrick warns that the government, the church and the public will oppose it. Money is thin, and Jean and Robert travel four hours a day to Oldham to work. Jean, a churchgoer who volunteers with her vicar, is close to her mother. The team works with small rodents, then fertilizes a first human egg, and a newspaper labels Robert a modern Frankenstein.
