Plot summary
Rose, a student who works on bees, adopts Beckett when he is a kitten, and he lives with her as a pampered housecat, taking his good fortune for granted. Rose's ex-boyfriend Larry comes to the house and helps her search for an answer to the deaths of many bees. Beckett grows jealous and tries to make Larry leave, and the attempt costs the cat his ninth life. Grace, who has charge of the animal afterlife, agrees to let him live again, granting him another set of lives in a string of other animal shapes: a badger, a rat, a cockroach, a parrot, a dog, a fish and a horse.
