Plot summary
Emma Woodhouse is a wealthy twenty-year-old in Regency England. She shares the Hartfield estate in Surrey with her widowed father. George Knightley, who owns nearby Donwell Abbey, is a friend of the family. Emma prides herself on her matchmaking, and her former governess, Miss Taylor, is now married to Mr Weston. She takes up Harriet Smith, a naive boarder at a girls' school of uncertain parentage, and urges her to turn down farmer Robert Martin for the vicar, Mr Elton. Knightley privately objects, saying she is raising Harriet's hopes for a man who would never accept her.
