Plot summary
Tim Lake spends his childhood in Cornwall with his parents, James and Mary, his uncle Desmond and his sister Katherine, whom the family calls Kit Kat. After a New Year's Eve party that goes badly, James tells him that the men of their line can travel back to moments of their own past. Tim tries it at once, returning to the party to change a few small things. His father warns him off chasing money or fame with the gift, so Tim turns to his love life instead. The next summer, Kit Kat's friend Charlotte comes to stay, and Tim is smitten with her straight away. Later he goes to London to study law and lives with Harry, a playwright his father knows.
