Plot summary
Karl Hoffmann, an unemployed mechanic, hears Ernst Röhm speak at a Nazi rally and joins the Sturmabteilung, convinced the party will bring the German working class a better life. His brother Helmut, a university student, dismisses the movement as primitive rubbish until he meets Reinhard Heydrich at fencing practice and witnesses a meeting between Adolf Hitler and industrialists of the Ruhr. Helmut joins the Schutzstaffel and takes a post in its intelligence service, while Karl, already a year in the SA, is distressed by the tension between the two organizations. Around them are Mitzi Templer, a singer the brothers know, and Ludwig Rosenberg, Helmut's professor of German literature and friend.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil (1985)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Most of the actors were in their 30s when the film was made, playing characters of 20 to 22 at the start, so make-up and costuming were used in the first part of the film to show them in their younger days because the actors do not age a decade on screen.
- SA-Gruppenführer Josef Biegler, played by Paul Brooke, was a composite of several real-life SA generals rather than a portrait of any one of them.
