Plot summary
In the summer of 1939, Michael Walton asks his older cousins Walter and Oliver Page about their great-aunt Anne Keyes, his grandmother's sister, and Walter recalls that summer at the Keyes estate in Norfolk. Anne is an actress and the adopted eldest child of Sir Alexander, a Member of Parliament, and Maud. She is in love with Lawrence, a Foreign Office official. On her father's birthday she arranges a lunch in the garden; among the guests is Hector, a family friend and MP who argues that Britain should act against Nazi Germany. Sir Alexander brings Joseph Balcombe, a government employee. While looking for a cat in a shed kept for her father's private papers, Anne finds gramophone records labeled Foxtrot.
