Rachel Weisz
Biography
Rachel Weisz is a British actress known for independent films and blockbusters. Born in Westminster, she began in stage and television in the early 1990s, making her film debut in Death Machine (1994), and won a Critics' Circle award for a 1994 revival of Design for Living. Her breakthrough was as Evelyn Carnahan in The Mummy (1999), which she reprised in The Mummy Returns (2001). For The Constant Gardener (2005), she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. On stage, she won a Laurence Olivier Award for her 2009 portrayal of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. In the 2010s, she appeared in The Bourne Legacy (2012) and Denial (2016), and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Favourite (2018), receiving another Academy Award nomination. She played Melina Vostokoff in Black Widow (2021) and starred in the miniseries Dead Ringers (2023).

A role that slipped away
Weisz started modeling when she was 14. In 1984, she drew public attention by turning down a part in King David with Richard Gere.
Early training
Weisz helped start Cambridge Talking Tongues, a student drama group for women. At the 1991 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the group earned a Guardian Student Drama Award for an improvised two-woman show called Slight Possession, which Weisz wrote.
Big break
Weisz's stage breakthrough came as Gilda in the 1994 Gielgud Theatre revival of Noël Coward's Design for Living, directed by Sean Mathias, earning her the London Critics' Circle Award for most promising newcomer.
A role that slipped away
Weisz turned down a chance to appear in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, citing script issues. Maria Bello ended up with the role.
