Plot summary
Nine years after Imhotep was defeated, Rick and Evelyn O'Connell live in London with their son, Alex, and the family recovers the Bracelet of Anubis from ancient ruins. When Alex puts the bracelet on, it fixes itself to his wrist and feeds him visions of Ahm Shere. A cult under the museum curator Baltus Hafez seizes Evelyn and uses the Book of the Dead to bring Imhotep back, planning to pit his power against the Scorpion King for command of the army of Anubis. Meela Nais, the reincarnation of Anck-su-namun, and the enforcer Lock-Nah serve the cult. Rick sets out after Evelyn with her brother Jonathan and the Medjai chieftain Ardeth Bay.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Mummy Returns (2001)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Scorpion King's CGI in The Mummy Returns was widely criticized for its uncanny valley look, partly because the visual effects team had limited reference material of Dwayne Johnson: his WWE commitments prevented the detailed facial scans needed for an accurate digital double.
- The Mummy Returns became the fastest-selling DVD ever in the United States, selling 2 million copies in its first week and surpassing Gladiator, before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace took the record two weeks later with 2.2 million copies.
- Freddie Boath won the part of Alex O'Connell, the O'Connells' son, after deciding to audition for The Mummy Returns instead of for Harry Potter.
- The first teaser trailer was pulled from screenings of How the Grinch Stole Christmas after parents complained it was too intense and frightening for young children, and was instead shown before Charlie's Angels, The 6th Day, Unbreakable and Vertical Limit.
- On release, The Mummy Returns took $23.4 million on its first day and $26.8 million the next, giving it the highest Friday and Saturday grosses ever at the time, beating Toy Story 2 and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
