First role
Armstrong wrote a letter to MGM after learning Get Carter would be filmed in Newcastle, and the studio invited him to meet director Mike Hodges, who wanted local actors. It became his screen debut.
A role that slipped away
Armstrong was a Dickens fan since reading David Copperfield aloud in school, and he remembered Dan Peggotty's houseboat on the beach. To play Daniel Peggotty in the 1999 BBC adaptation, he declined an offer from Clint Eastwood, his White Hunter Black Heart colleague.
