Plot summary
Centuries ago, Fred Claus grew up in the shadow of his younger brother Nick, whose kind and selfless ways won the family's approval. Nick is now Santa Claus, delivering gifts to the world's children, while Fred works as a repossession agent in Chicago, where he lives alone and looks out for an orphan named Samuel "Slam" Gibbons. Short of the money he needs, Fred calls the North Pole for a loan. Nick agrees only if Fred comes north to work through the Christmas rush, so Fred travels to the workshop, where he is set to sorting children as naughty or nice. An efficiency expert, Clyde Northcutt, arrives to assess the North Pole's performance.

- Fred Claus was a box-office bomb, grossing $97.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $100 million, and it took mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.
- As well as starring in the film, Ludacris contributed an original song titled "Ludacrismas", which includes portions of "Here Comes Santa Claus".
- Christophe Beck composed the original music for the film, but portions of Alan Silvestri's Mouse Hunt score also turn up in the finished soundtrack.
- The film is loosely based on a poem, "A legend of Santa and his brother Fred", which was written by Donald Henkel.
