Plot summary
Susie Salmon is fourteen and lives in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1973. She wants to be a wildlife photographer and hopes for a first kiss with Ray Singh, a British transfer student who asks her out. Walking home through a cornfield, she goes with her neighbor George Harvey into an underground hideout he has built. Susie is pulled into the In-Between, neither Heaven nor Earth, and from there she looks on as her father Jack, her mother Abigail, her sister Lindsey and her brother Buckley try to live without her. Holly, another girl in that place, tells her she must move on, but Susie stays, unwilling to leave the family and the boy behind.

In November 2009 Peter Jackson said he had re-shot new footage of Harvey's death scene after test audiences said it was not violent enough to give people the satisfaction they needed, while staying within constraints that would let the film keep a PG-13 rating.SPOILER
The British Board of Film Classification reported 24 objections to the rating given to The Lovely Bones, more than for any other film in 2010. Complainants compared the scene in which young Susie is entrapped by the killer, and the killer soaking in a bath after the murder, to scenes in 18-rated horror films.- For the film's ending Brian Eno uncovered a demo he had done in 1973 and reunited with the vocalist to create a proper version, a song he said was finally finished in 2008.
- New Line Cinema was excluded from the negotiations for the film because of Peter Jackson's legal dispute with the studio over royalties from his The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
