Plot summary
Deborah Lipstadt, an American professor of Holocaust studies, is sued for libel in Britain by David Irving, a writer on Nazi Germany who objects to her books calling him a Holocaust denier. In British libel cases the defendant carries the burden of proof, so Lipstadt and her publisher must establish that Irving lied about the Holocaust. Solicitor Anthony Julius and barrister Richard Rampton lead her defense. Preparing for the case, she and Rampton travel to the former Auschwitz camp in Poland, where the historian Robert van Pelt describes how the gas chambers worked, and the research team obtains Irving's personal diaries through a subpoena. Rampton's questions strike Lipstadt as disrespectful, and her team limits how much she does on the case, contending that her participation could hurt their chances.
