Disobedience (2018) on Netflix

Plot summary

Ronit Krushka works as a photographer in New York and comes home to North London when her father, the old Rav, dies of pneumonia. The community banished her long ago for conduct that did not conform to Orthodox culture, and she is uncomfortable seeing everyone again. She finds that Dovid, the disciple her father had chosen, and Esti, her friend since childhood, have married, and Dovid offers her a room in their house. A Shabbat dinner at her uncle Moshe's brings questions about the name she adopted in America and advice that she ought to marry. Ronit replies that staying in London would likely have meant a marriage arranged for her and that she would have been suicidal. Moshe also tells her that the house and everything in it went to the synagogue.
