Plot summary
In 1888 a Ukrainian peasant named Yanko Goorall is the only survivor when his emigrant ship sinks off the coast of Cornwall, and the bodies of the other passengers are buried in a mass grave. He reaches the Swaffer farm sick and hungry, and his appearance frightens the household. Amy Foster, a servant whose parents, Mary and Isaac Foster, give her little affection, is not afraid of him. She washes, feeds and cares for him, and in the morning the townspeople take him away to work. Months later Dr. James Kennedy realizes the stranger is Ukrainian, and the Swaffers give him wages and regular hours. Yanko learns English, saves for a new suit, and asks Amy to walk out with him.
