Plot summary
Orphaned young, Stephen and Bloom grow up moving through a string of foster homes, and a scheme Stephen invents when he is thirteen to push his younger brother toward a girl turns into their first con. Twenty-five years on, the pair work swindles with Bang Bang, an explosives expert who joined them unannounced, and Bloom, losing the sense of what is real, wants out. Stephen tracks him to Montenegro and talks him into a final job: Penelope Stamp, a wealthy and eccentric heiress who lives alone in New Jersey and picks up hobbies by reading books about them. Bloom pedals a bicycle into her sports car, and, pretending to be an antiques dealer bound for Europe, the brothers draw her into a voyage toward Greece.

- In a two-week rehearsal period Rachel Weisz had to look convincing at everything her character Penelope could do: banjo, violin, guitar, piano, juggling, break dancing, skateboarding, the giraffe unicycle and card tricks.
- The card trick defeated Rachel Weisz longest, taking a month of daily practice. It took about eleven takes to get, and the single unbroken shot that ended up in the film was not enhanced in any way.
