Plot summary
In Mexico, a scavenger finds the point of the spear that pierced Christ and, possessed, carries it to Los Angeles. There John Constantine, a chain-smoking occult expert who perceives half-angels and half-demons as they truly are, drives a demon out of a young girl. He has terminal lung cancer, and his own teenage suicide attempt has damned him; he hopes good deeds might earn him a place in Heaven instead. The angel Gabriel tells him he is unworthy of a longer life. Detective Angela Dodson refuses to accept that her twin sister Isabel, a devout Catholic, fell to her death from the roof of a psychiatric hospital. Security footage leads her to Constantine, who turns her away until demons come after her.

- Nicolas Cage was set to star when Warner Bros. planned to begin filming in 2002 with director Tarsem Singh, but Singh dropped out and both he and the studio filed lawsuits against each other, leading Warner Bros. to hire first-time director Francis Lawrence, previously known only for commercials and music videos.
- John Constantine's creator Alan Moore, still bitter over the earlier adaptations of his comics From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, refused any credit or association with Constantine and asked that his share of royalties be split among the character's other creators instead.
- Director Francis Lawrence said his team designed the film's Hell by combining a visual effects supervisor's and production designer's ideas for biological growth crawling over cars with footage of actual 1940s nuclear test blasts, aiming for a landscape and atmosphere that looked like an eternal nuclear explosion that never finishes destroying anything.
- Michelle Monaghan filmed several scenes as Ellie, a demon Constantine sleeps with for information, but director Francis Lawrence cut the relationship down to two brief shots and a single line of dialogue in the finished film so Constantine would come across as more of a loner.
