Plot summary
After the death of her mother, the poet Sara Harmon, nineteen-year-old Lucy Harmon travels from America to a villa in Tuscany, where her mother's friends Ian and Diana Grayson live. Ian is a sculptor, and Lucy is to sit for a portrait he will carve. Lucy has two hopes for the summer: to see Niccolò Donati, the boy she kissed four years ago on an earlier visit, and to learn the identity of her biological father.

- Björk's "Bachelorette" was originally written for the soundtrack under the working title "Bertolucci", but she later faxed Bertolucci to tell him the song would be used on her own album, 1997's Homogenic, instead.
