Plot summary
Tom Sherbourne, a veteran of the First World War, takes a post as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia, wanting the solitude it offers. On his visits to the mainland he meets Isabel Graysmark, and the two marry after a courtship carried on by letter. Isabel joins him on the island, and when she loses two babies she grieves beside their graves. Then a rowboat drifts in carrying a dead man and a living newborn girl. Tom knows the law requires him to report the discovery. Isabel asks him to bury the man and keep the child as their own, saying the baby would otherwise go to an orphanage, and Tom gives in. They name the girl Lucy.
