Donna Murphy
Biography
Donna Murphy is an American actress and singer, born in New York City, whose career has centered on the musical stage. She left New York University's drama program when she was cast as an understudy in the 1979 Broadway musical They're Playing Our Song. She has been nominated five times for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, winning for Fosca in Passion and Anna Leonowens in The King and I, and she took a Drama Desk Award for Wonderful Town. Her Off-Broadway credits include Song of Singapore, Hello Again and Into the Woods, and she played Dolly Gallagher Levi as the alternate to Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! On screen she played Anij in Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), Rosalie Octavius in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Dita Mandy in The Bourne Legacy (2012), and voiced Mother Gothel in Tangled (2010). She won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1997 and plays Caroline Schermerhorn Astor in The Gilded Age.

Early training
During her sophomore year, Murphy left the New York University drama program. She had been cast as an understudy for the three backup singers in They're Playing Our Song, a Broadway musical from 1979.
