Plot summary
In 1968, the example of Sir Francis Chichester draws Donald Crowhurst, an English businessman and amateur sailor, into the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a solo yacht race around the world. He believes technology and determination will carry him through in a custom trimaran, and that finishing will secure his wife Clare and their young children. Costs and delays mount as the boat is prepared, and Crowhurst pledges his company and his home to his main sponsor, Stanley Best, if he fails to complete the race. Barely ready when the race begins, he leaves his wife and children behind and sets out alone on the Teignmouth Electron, sending optimistic reports to his press agent, Rodney Hallworth.
