Plot summary
The marriage of Hester Collyer to Sir William Collyer, a High Court judge, is affectionate but without sexual passion. She begins an affair with Freddie Page, a former RAF pilot whose memories of the war still trouble him, and the relationship leaves her emotionally stranded. When the affair is discovered, Hester gives up a life of comfort and moves into a London flat with Freddie, who has awakened her sexuality but chases thrills and offers her neither the stability nor the love of her married life. The wartime mix of fear and excitement Freddie once knew is no longer in his life.
