Plot summary
Natasha Romanoff is an Avenger who lived undercover in Ohio posing as a family with Yelena Belova, Alexei Shostakov and Melina Vostokoff. Wanted for breaking the Sokovia Accords, she escapes from Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross to a safehouse in Norway arranged by Rick Mason. Yelena, trained as a Widow in the Red Room, is exposed to a synthetic gas that cancels the Red Room's chemical mind control, then sends Natasha vials of an antidote and goes into hiding, hoping the Avengers will free the other Widows. Red Room agent Taskmaster attacks Natasha while she drives with the vials.

- Scarlett Johansson sued the Walt Disney Company in Los Angeles County Superior Court in July 2021, claiming Black Widow's simultaneous Disney+ release broke a contract clause promising an exclusive theatrical run. The suit said the streaming release exempted Disney from paying her "very large box office bonuses".
- Lionsgate acquired the Black Widow film rights and hired David Hayter to write and direct in 2004, but dropped the project by June 2006, when the rights went back to Marvel Studios. Hayter tried to find another financier and said the failure left him heartbroken.
- Before Scarlett Johansson was signed, Marvel Studios held early talks in January 2009 with Emily Blunt to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but she could not take the role because she was already committed to star in Gulliver's Travels.
- Ray Winstone disliked Black Widow's additional photography, saying it changed the character he and director Cate Shortland had created and that he felt Marvel Studios executives were criticizing his performance. He wanted to be recast but was contractually obligated to return.
- O-T Fagbenle auditioned for the original version of Taskmaster, a maniac with an African accent, and the part came down to him and one other actor. After the story changed, Marvel asked him to play Rick Mason instead, and he accepted.
- David Harbour gained weight to be 280 lb for Black Widow, then lost 60 lb over the course of filming to play a younger version of his character in the opening flashback sequence.
- Alexandre Desplat was announced as Black Widow's composer in January 2020, but late in post-production Lorne Balfe replaced him; Desplat confirmed the swap in May 2020.
- Black Widow was the first of several Marvel Cinematic Universe films to not get a theatrical release in China, a "de facto ban" that was not lifted until 2023.
