Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Warner Bros. and producer Arnon Milchan paid a record $8 million in 1996 for the rights to John Grisham's novel, a deal that also included first-look rights to Grisham's next book; director Joel Schumacher was originally attached with Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sean Connery, but all dropped out in 1997.
- When Alfonso Cuarón was attached to direct in 1999, he and Grisham reworked the story so the plaintiff sued a gun manufacturer instead of a tobacco company, a change made because of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and the similar premise of the film The Insider.
- In 2001, Mike Newell was considered to direct the adaptation with Will Smith attached to star, but a deal was unable to be met and the pairing never happened.
- Naomi Watts had been considered for the female lead in the film, but she did not commit to the part, and Rachel Weisz signed on in June instead.
