Plot summary
At Mercy, a college in the American Midwest, Adam Sorenson studies English literature and works as a security guard at a museum and at a rental. There he meets Evelyn Ann Thompson, a graduate art student trying to paint a penis on an important statue. They argue, and then arrange a dinner. Adam has never had much success with women, and her interest flatters him. She becomes his girlfriend, and he introduces her to his best friend Phillip and Phillip's fiancée Jenny. At Evelyn's suggestion he gets a new hairstyle, exercises regularly, eats healthier food, dresses more stylishly and wears contact lenses instead of eyeglasses, and he becomes more confident and dominant. Phillip and Jenny welcome the changes in his appearance.
