Plot summary
Orphaned as a child, Philip grows up on his older cousin Ambrose's large estate in Cornwall, in a household with no women. When Ambrose travels to Florence for his health, he writes that he has married their widowed cousin Rachel, and his later letters show distrust of his doctors and his wife. Philip crosses to Italy and learns from Rachel's friend Rainaldi that Ambrose is dead and Rachel has gone. The will leaves the estate to Philip at twenty-five and nothing to Rachel, and he holds her responsible. Back in Cornwall he waits for her to arrive, meaning to greet her coldly.

- For the part, Weisz had to learn to ride a horse side-saddle, a feat made harder by her costume. The horse, previously used on Game of Thrones, fell to the ground when it felt Weisz pull on its rein, as it had been trained to do for television, causing her to fear for her safety.
- Weisz was costumed by Dinah Collin, who aimed for a fashion foreign to Cornwall and consulted portraits for an authentic look. The pearls were made for the film, based on an 1835 painting, and the crew decided on only two main dresses for Rachel, since she was not at home in Cornwall.
