Plot summary
The Atenton family, Will and Libby with their daughters Trish and Dee Dee, move from New York into a house near the woods in a New England town. Will has left his editing job at a publishing house to write a book and spend more time with them. At first the family is happy there. Then a stranger watches them through the window, and other unsettling events follow. Five years before, a mother and her two children were killed in the home, and a man was committed to a psychiatric hospital over the deaths and released recently. Will asks Ann Patterson, a neighbor who knew the family, what happened, but she holds back, and her estranged husband Jack is hostile. The police take no interest in his questions.
