Biography

Dustin Lee Hoffman was born in Los Angeles, California, to Lillian (Gold) and Harry Hoffman, who was a furniture salesman and prop supervisor for Columbia Pictures. He was raised in a Jewish family (from Ukraine, Russia-Poland, and Romania). Hoffman graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1955, and went to Santa Monica City College, where he dropped out after a year due to bad grades. But before he did, he took an acting course because he was told that "nobody flunks acting." Also received some training at Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. Decided to go into acting because he did not want to work or go into the service. Trained at The Pasadena Playhouse for two years.

Did you know?!

  1. Getting ready for a role

Hoffman had never met the director, who only knew him from The Graduate. To change that impression, he wore a dirty raincoat and slicked back his hair, with an unshaven face, when they met in Times Square.

  2. A role that slipped away

Hoffman initially turned down the title role in Lenny, saying he did not think the script was strong enough and was not sure he was right for it, before reading Lenny Bruce's autobiography and changing his mind.

  3. Behind the camera

Hoffman made his directorial debut with Quartet in 2012, a BBC comedy-drama starring Maggie Smith that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

  4. About the name

In 1991, Hoffman gave voice to Mr. Bergstrom, a substitute teacher, in the Simpsons episode "Lisa's Substitute." He was credited as Sam Etic, a pseudonym that plays on "Semitic."

  5. First role

At the Pasadena Playhouse, Hoffman took on his first acting role. Gene Hackman, who would later win an Academy Award, was there with him.
