Tom Bell
Biography
Tom Bell was an English actor who worked across stage, film, and television, often cast as menacing or seedy characters. Born in Liverpool in 1933, he trained with Esme Church at Bradford Civic Theatre and then worked in repertory in Liverpool and Dublin. He first acted in school plays at fifteen and made his film debut in Joseph Losey's The Criminal in 1960. Early British New Wave credits included The Kitchen and The L-Shaped Room (1962), and other films included H.M.S. Defiant (1962) and The Long Day's Dying (1968). On television he earned a BAFTA nomination for playing Frank Ross in Out in 1978, and appeared as Adolf Eichmann in Holocaust. He became best known as Detective Sergeant Bill Otley, opposite Helen Mirren, in Prime Suspect, a role that brought a second BAFTA nomination in 1993. Later film work included Wish You Were Here (1987), Prospero's Books (1991), and The Krays (1990). He died in 2006.
