Plot summary
With British men away fighting in the Second World War, the Women's Land Army recruits women to work on farms, and the women who join are nicknamed land girls. In 1941 three of them arrive at a remote farm in the Dorset countryside. Prue is a vivacious hairdresser, Ag is a quiet Cambridge University graduate, and Stella is dreamy and in love with Philip, a Royal Navy officer. The three are an unlikely trio from different social backgrounds, and they soon become close friends. Their friendships with one another and their relationships with the men around them develop as the war continues.
