Biography

Djimon Hounsou, a Beninese-American actor born in Cotonou, Benin, began in music videos before his first screen role in Without You I'm Nothing (1990). Steven Spielberg cast him as Cinqué in Amistad (1997), a performance that brought a Golden Globe nomination, and he earned Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for In America (2002) and Blood Diamond (2006), also winning a National Board of Review award for the latter. He plays Korath the Pursuer in the Marvel films Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Captain Marvel (2019), and he portrayed the wizard Shazam in Shazam! (2019), then in Black Adam (2022) and later Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). Other credits include Stargate (1994), Gladiator (2000), The Island (2005), Furious 7 (2015), The Legend of Tarzan (2016), A Quiet Place Part II (2021) and Gran Turismo (2023). He directed the documentary In Search of Voodoo: Roots to Heaven (2018).

    Before film, Hounsou appeared in music videos for Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", Tina Turner's "I Don't Wanna Lose You", Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" and Madonna's "Express Yourself" between 1989 and 1991.

    In 2004, Hounsou earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his role in In America. He became the fourth African man to receive an Oscar nomination.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Hounsou was set to voice Black Panther in a television series announced in November 2008, and director Tim Story said he would have cast Hounsou as Black Panther in a third Fantastic Four film.

  4. A role that slipped away

    Hounsou was cast as Abdiel in the film adaptation of John Milton's Paradise Lost, alongside Benjamin Walker and Bradley Cooper, but the project was scrapped in early February 2012.

  5. Beyond film

    Hounsou made a guest appearance in 2024 on Black Coffee's song "Ode to Ancestors." The track was part of an EP inspired by Zack Snyder's movie Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver.
