Plot summary
Sonny Burns and Gunner Casselman were old classmates before the Korean War and both served in the Army's 7th Infantry Division. Gunner came home a decorated corporal who had fought in the combat zone; Sonny, a private, had spent his service at a public information posting in Kansas City. Now both are back in Indianapolis, searching in the conservative middle America of the 1950s. Gunner is trying to convince his mother, Nina, that his girl, Marty, is good enough for him. Sonny, the quieter of the two, is divided between his loyalty to Buddy and his attraction to Gale Ann.
