Plot summary
In ancient Egypt, the high priest Imhotep carries on an affair with Anck-su-namun, Pharaoh Seti's mistress, and is mummified alive at Hamunaptra. The Medjai are sworn to prevent his return. In 1926 Cairo, the librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan own a map and a box pointing to Hamunaptra, a city now considered a myth. Jonathan took the box from Rick O'Connell, who saw the city while serving in the French Foreign Legion. Evelyn frees Rick from prison so he will lead her there.

- Shooting in the Sahara for The Mummy was dangerous enough that the medical team invented a drink the cast and crew had to drink every two hours to avoid dehydration, several crew members were airlifted out after animal bites or stings, Brendan Fraser nearly died filming his hanging scene, and the cast carried kidnapping insurance.
- Producer James Jacks first offered the lead role of Rick O'Connell to Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, all of whom passed or couldn't fit it into their schedules, before Brendan Fraser landed the part on the strength of George of the Jungle's box office.
- The Mummy became 1999's best-selling live-action VHS release and the second best-selling DVD of the year behind The Matrix, helping push Universal's total home-video sales past $1 billion.
- Evelyn Carnahan's name is a tribute to the real Lady Evelyn Herbert, daughter of Egyptologist Lord Carnarvon, who was actually present alongside her father at the 1922 opening of Tutankhamun's tomb.
- Rather than hiring a stunt double, actor Arnold Vosloo performed all of Imhotep's motion capture himself, having his live performance recorded by eight cameras from different angles in a separate motion-capture studio after each scene was shot on set.
