Biography

Mark Gatiss is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, director and novelist. Born in Sedgefield, County Durham, he trained in theater arts and formed the sketch team The League of Gentlemen, which started as a stage act in 1995, won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1997 and moved to BBC television in 1999. He wrote and appeared in that series, and with Steven Moffat created Sherlock, playing Mycroft Holmes, and Dracula, playing Renfield, while also writing several Doctor Who episodes and acting in the show. His film work includes Victor Frankenstein (2015), Denial (2016), Christopher Robin (2018), The Favourite (2018), The Father (2020) and Operation Mincemeat (2021). On stage, Coriolanus brought him an Olivier Award nomination, and he won Olivier Awards for Three Days in the Country and for The Motive and the Cue.

Early training
Gatiss first met his League of Gentlemen co-writers and performers while attending Bretton Hall in Yorkshire, a drama school he went to after a gap year traveling around Europe.
Behind the camera
Gatiss made his directorial debut with an adaptation of an M. R. James story, The Tractate Middoth, broadcast on BBC Two on Christmas Day 2013.
