Biography

Peter Stormare is a Swedish and American actor who first made his name on stage in Sweden, playing Hamlet in Ingmar Bergman's 1988 production, and then broke through for American audiences as Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo (1996). Born in Kumla, Sweden, and raised in Arbrå, he trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. He became known for playing characters of many nationalities, among them a German in The Big Lebowski (1998), a Russian in Armageddon (1998), a Frenchman in Chocolat (2000) and an Italian in The Brothers Grimm (2005). His other films include The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Dancer in the Dark (2000), Minority Report (2002), Bad Boys II (2003), Constantine (2005), 22 Jump Street (2014) and John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). On television he played John Abruzzi in Prison Break, and he has voiced roles in video games. He also released an album in 2002 and runs the label StormVox.

    Stormare changed his surname after finding a senior student at his acting academy shared his birth name, Storm. He briefly considered the name Retep Mrots, which is Peter Storm backwards.

    Peter Stormare was offered a part in the ABC television series Lost that would have lasted one year, but he turned the offer down.
