Plot summary
A getaway driver and a wounded accomplice, both dressed as clowns, flee the American Border Patrol and crash through the fence into Mexico. Officers Vasquez and Romero arrest the driver, find more than two million dollars in the back seat of his car, and hold him in El Pueblito prison on false charges. The police keep the cash. Inside, El Pueblito looks less like a jail than a ghetto with its own businesses and criminal order, and the driver, known there as the Gringo, works out who runs what. He robs some of the prison's shadier operations. A kid who lives in the prison with his mother sees one of the thefts, and the criminals there watch over him. The Gringo wants to know why.
