Plot summary
Lauren Gray works as a cryptozoologist at Cryptozoo, a zoo for legendary creatures, and spends much of her time away rescuing them from the black market. In American camps during World War II, a Baku named Mariko rid her of the nightmares of her childhood, and the creature has since been trafficked to America. While saving an alkonost from peasants with a faun, Gustav, Gray loses it to Nicholas, a trafficker who sells cryptids as bioweapons to the United States military for the Vietnam War. Joan, the zoo's owner and Gray's mentor, tells her that Mariko has appeared after fleeing and asks her to search for the Baku with Phoebe, a gorgon. The Johnson administration hopes to use the Baku against the counterculture movement.
