Plot summary
Carson Phillips, a former football player who left his Texas hometown in disgrace after throwing a match, works as a private investigator in Los Angeles. He is hired to look into Barbara Van Poole, a patient at a mental facility in Galveston who has been out of contact, because her niece in Los Angeles is worried about her. The fee is large, and Phillips owes money to loan sharks, so he goes. At the sanatorium the staff look nervous when he asks for Barbara, and Dr. Miles, the head doctor, keeps him waiting for days without letting him see her. Breaking into a rear wing, Phillips finds mostly empty rooms. In town he visits a gambling casino run by Doc, the powerbroker who owns most of Galveston. He also meets Jayne Hunt, the woman he left behind.
