Plot summary
Ignacio works as the cook at the orphanage of a monastery in Oaxaca, the same orphanage that raised him. He longs to become a professional wrestler, but the friars treat the sport as a sin of vanity and have banned it. Money is short, so the children he feeds get poor meals. Sister Encarnación, a teacher newly assigned to the orphanage, becomes another subject of his private turmoil. One night a thief steals the orphanage's tortilla chips from him, and Ignacio finds the man and talks him into becoming his tag team partner, offering a share of any prize money they win. Calling himself Nacho to hide who he is, he enters an amateur tag team match with Steven, who wrestles as Esqueleto.

- Nacho Libre is loosely based on Fray Tormenta ("Friar Storm"), a real Mexican Catholic priest who secretly wrestled as a masked luchador for 23 years to fund the orphanage he ran.
- While filming a wrestling stunt, Jack Black gashed his eye diving out of the ring, was rushed to the hospital, and then returned to keep filming.
- Jack Black initially hesitated to take the role over concerns about playing a Mexican character, until director Jared Hess reassured him that Ignacio was written as a white American who had simply been born and raised in Mexico.
