Plot summary
Daniel Longdale, attorney for the wealthy widow Mrs. Christian, approaches private investigator Tom Welles. Clearing out her late husband's safe, she and Longdale discover an 8mm movie that seems to record a girl's murder. Longdale calls snuff films a myth, but she wants assurance the violence is not real, and both ask Welles to keep the assignment secret. Searching missing persons records, he identifies the girl as Mary Ann Mathews and travels to North Carolina to meet Janet, her mother. Janet permits him to search her house, where he finds Mary Ann's diary, which tells of her plan to go to Hollywood and become a film star. She insists he learn what became of her daughter. Max California, a clerk at an adult video store, guides him into underground fetish pornography, where dealers answer with angry denial.
