Plot summary
The National Security Agency builds a cipher it calls Mercury and tests it by hiding the puzzle in a magazine. Nine-year-old Simon Lynch, an autistic boy who loves puzzles, solves it and dials the number written into the answer, reaching two NSA cryptographers. Their boss, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Kudrow, calls Simon a national security threat and sends assassins to the Lynch home. Art Jeffries, an FBI agent on desk duty after a botched hostage standoff, is sent to the crime scene, where he finds Simon hidden in a crawl space. The boy is moved to a hospital protection ward, and Jeffries stays close as the killers keep looking for him.
