Plot summary
The engineer and hacker Jack Guy invented a compact energy source. He wanted it made as a product that would benefit people, and he was to develop it for the entrepreneur Belcor alongside the engineer Ranish. When Jack Guy learns that Belcor means to apply the invention to weapons technology, he walks away and vanishes. With a new identity, he settles off the grid in a cabin beside a lake, in woods outside a small town. He keeps mostly to himself and builds the cabin on his own, though he sometimes helps the locals and tutors a gifted young student. Belcor still wants the work completed and has Jack Guy searched for. Once Jack Guy is located, Belcor sends a team under the assassin Marcus to capture him.
