Plot summary
Sara wants to marry and have children, while Tomas, the novelist she lives with in rural Quebec, wants to give his attention to his books. Driving home along a winter road after the two of them quarrel, he hits a toboggan that two brothers, Christopher and Nicholas, have sent sliding into his path. Nicholas is killed, and five-year-old Christopher is left without physical injury. Kate, the mother of the two boys, is left with her own guilt and grief. The crash and its aftermath leave Tomas traumatized. He and Sara separate soon afterward, and he keeps in occasional touch with Kate.
