Plot summary
Anna is a young widow who is finally getting on with her life after the death of her husband, Sean. Now engaged to be married, Anna meets a ten-year-old boy who tells her he is Sean reincarnated. Though his story is both unsettling and absurd, Anna can't get the boy out of her mind. And much to the concern of her fiancée, her increased contact with him leads her to question the choices she has made in her life.

- The scene in which Kidman's character shares a bath with Bright's, both apparently naked, caused controversy, but Bright was never naked and the two were never even in the same room except for one shot, for which both wore special clothes invisible to the camera.
- Nicole Kidman read the screenplay and approached Glazer about the film, but he resisted at first, feeling her celebrity was so everywhere that it could only hurt the delicate nature of the character, until meeting her convinced him she was ready to inhabit the role.
- Jonathan Glazer, coming off his first feature Sexy Beast, wanted to make a film about the idea of eternal love, and the initial idea came to him one day in his kitchen: a little kid telling a woman that he is her dead husband.
- At its Venice Film Festival premiere, the first press screening of Birth was met with booing and catcalls from critics.
- Glazer went to Paris to work on the story with French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, spending eight months going back and forth every weekend to turn one paragraph into three acts, and the script ran to 21 drafts with co-screenwriter Milo Addica.
- Kidman was given only two days off during filming to fly to the 75th Academy Awards, where she won Best Actress for The Hours.
