Plot summary
Vianne Rocher and her six-year-old daughter, Anouk, drift through Europe before reaching Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, a quiet French village, at the start of Lent in 1959. There Vianne opens a small chocolate shop. The Comte de Reynaud, the mayor, objects to her tempting the townspeople during the season of Lent. The villagers keep their distance at first, but a few begin to visit. Her elderly landlady, Armande Voizin, is among her first allies.

- Producer Harvey Weinstein challenged USA Today critic Andy Seiler to choose a venue where the film was showing, to prove that audiences liked it even if not all critics did; after the screening in Washington D.C. nobody in the audience said anything negative.
- Victoire Thivisol played Vianne's daughter Anouk but was voiced by Sally Taylor-Isherwood, because Victoire's French accent made her difficult to understand.
- The film is dedicated to the memory of the renowned cameraman Mike Roberts, who died in his sleep of natural causes during filming in England.
- Chocolat grossed US$152,699,946 worldwide on a production budget of US$25 million, but the film itself was not successful in France.
