Plot summary
Janie Jones is 13 and wants to play music. Her mother, Mary Ann Jones, a former groupie, takes her to a show by Ethan Brand, a rock star whose career is fading and whose drinking is out of control. Mary Ann tells Ethan that Janie is his daughter from a long-ago tryst and asks him to take responsibility while she goes into rehab. He pretends not to remember her and refuses. After the show she leaves Janie behind; Janie calls the police, and Officer Dickerson tells Ethan and his girlfriend, Iris, what has happened. A drug possession charge against Mary Ann and Ethan's name on the birth certificate mean that state care for Janie would bring him legal trouble, so he agrees to take her on tour. Janie meets the band: Billy, Chuck, Dave and the manager, Sloan.
