Plot summary

Stephen Fleming gave up medicine for politics and now serves as a minister in London. His wife Ingrid and their daughter Sally share the family townhouse, while their grown son Martyn, a journalist, lives elsewhere in the city. At a reception Stephen is introduced to Anna Barton, whose father is a British diplomat and whose mother is French. She presents herself as a friend of Martyn's. When Martyn brings Anna to the townhouse and says the two of them are romantically involved, the tension between Stephen and Anna is plain, though Martyn and Ingrid appear not to notice. Anna telephones Stephen's office, and he goes to her flat. Ingrid arranges a dinner for Martyn's promotion and probes Anna about her childhood.
