Plot summary
In 1221, a young man begins the journey that will lead him to St. Francis of Assisi. A thousand years afterward, Alfred Rott, a brilliant and cantankerous architect, travels to Malta to accept a commission unlike any other in his career. The man who hires him calls himself the Grand Duke of Corsica and wants a mausoleum built for a dying billionaire. A pandemic shapes both of their lives, though they live centuries apart. When an epidemic spreads across the island and a state of emergency brings chaos, most people are told to leave. Alfred, a professional, stays behind to finish the job.
