Biography

Robert Mitchum was an American actor and singer who built his screen reputation on film noir and on antihero parts. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he broke through in The Story of G.I. Joe (1945), which brought his only Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actor. As a contract player at RKO he grew into a leading man, playing a former private investigator in Out of the Past (1947) and a killer masquerading as a preacher in The Night of the Hunter (1955). Other well-known credits were River of No Return (1954), Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957), Cape Fear (1962), El Dorado (1966), Ryan's Daughter (1970) and The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973). He co-wrote and produced Thunder Road, and later played Captain Victor Henry in the miniseries The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Honors included a BAFTA nomination, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1984 and the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1992.

    Robert Mitchum said no to John Huston's Western The Misfits because the script did not appeal to him, and he had found Huston too demanding on their last collaboration, Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison.

    Mitchum made headlines after Blood Alley's director, William A. Wellman, asked for his dismissal. Producer John Wayne ended up playing the part himself.

    In 1991, the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures was set to give Mitchum a lifetime achievement award. He turned it down after finding out that accepting it in person meant covering his own travel and lodging.

  4. Beyond film

    Mitchum recorded the calypso album Calypso - is like so ... for Capitol in March 1957 after hearing traditional calypso and meeting artists like Mighty Sparrow and Lord Melody while filming in Tobago.
